Five Friday Thoughts – May 20

I’ve been stuck in a creative rut for a bit now. To break out of it, I’m going to word vomit recent pop culture happenings/things I’m watching/listening to at you. I’m kinda hoping that this becomes a regular thing on Fridays. Here are five things I’ve been thinking about/plan to consume this weekend.

5. Any discourse about “Conversations with Friends”

Have I watched this show yet? No. Did I wind up on anti-Conversations with Friends TikTok? Somehow yes. And I’m addicted. I am a proclaimed lover of Sally Rooney’s nonsensical lack of quotations. Hell, she brought Paul Mescal into my life – and into rumored fiancé Phoebe Bridgers’ life as well. So I had faith when a new show was announced on Hulu. I haven’t gotten around to actually watching it yet, but the reviews have been lukewarm from the Teens on TikTok.

Here’s an example of said discourse:

4. This Rolling Stone Headline

If you’re interested, here’s a link to the full article.

I went to a trivia night the other week with my best friend Anne. It was all Star Wars themed, which was super fun, but we got absolutely smoked by everyone else. I’ll never forget the moment they announced the next round: Women of Star Wards. Hell yeah, I thought. I might not know what the line following an iconic line is in the sixth movie, but I bet I can figure my way around this category.

Wrong.

The questions were similar to this format: “This person, who was a leader of the blah blah, was adopted by a MAN. What was the man’s name?”

I fear “Men” has this same issue, which is highly ironic.

3. What I’m Going to Watch at Home

I go through phases of watching nothing substantial (enter: The Circle, on Netflix; Southern Charm on YouTube TV) followed by periods of intensively watching any and all cinema. Currently, I’m in my slump era and am catching up on season 5 of Southern Charm. But, Under the Banner of Heaven is slowly easing me out of my trashy period.

If you’re looking for a new streaming movie to watch this weekend, I would recommend the following based on your mood:

  • Thriller: “Kimi” on HBO Max (one of my top movies of 2022!)
  • Horror: “Firestater” on Peacock
  • Drama: “Chungking Express” on HBO Max
  • Rom Com: “Practical Magic” on Hulu (defined part of my childhood)
  • Comedy: “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” on Disney+

2. What I Want to Watch at the Movies

As mentioned above, “Men” is out today. You can also catch “Downton Abbey: A New Era” starting this weekend. I probably won’t go to the movies THIS weekend, but you can bet your bottom dollar my booty will be in the seats next weekend for “Top Gun: Maverick”. In case you haven’t heard yet, the reviews are coming in and it’s looking great for T. Cruise.

1. What I’m listening to

Do you even have to ask? Duh.

Harry’s House is out now!

My favorite tracks so far are “Music For a Sushi Restaurant,” “Cinema,” and “Satellite”. Although it’s different sonically from his other stuff, I feel like each album he grows tremendously as a songwriter. He’s so fluid with his genres – starting out with a 70s rock then twisting into some 80s pop then disco. The man just makes bops. It’s what he does.

Have a great weekend and treat yourself to some great pop culture.
