A Film A Day: “Breaking News in Yuba County”

Today’s film is one my parent showed me the trailer for a long time ago, and as I was scrolling Hulu, I noticed it was available to stream now.

Breaking News in Yuba County centers around Sue Buttons – your average, anxious middle aged woman who, just like Molly Ringwald, has her birthday forgotten by everybody. This includes her banker husband, who is a garbage can on fire and is sneaking off to meet up with his mistress on HIS WIFE’S BIRTHDAY!! Of all the days to cheat.

Sue stumbles upon this discovery, and things begin to spiral from there. Sue, played deftly (as always) by Allison Janey, is joined in a hell of a cast by reporter sister Nancy (Mila Kunis), a ex-con brother in law (Jimmi Simpson) and his boss Rita (Wanda Sykes), Detective Harris (Regina King), and a big time crime boss protege (Awkwafina). Side note: why is there a major crime ring in a tiny ass town like Yuba county? You know what, I’m not going to question it.

It’s a fun dark comedy, perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon. The performances are the best part of the film, and you’ll find yourself simultaneously rooting for and disgusted by most of the people in this film.

Breaking News in Yuba County is streaming now on Hulu and Amazon Prime with an Epix account.
