What’s New (and Notable) in November

Can you believe we have survived 2020 into the 11th month? I honestly can’t. It feels like we’re in post-April – time stopped ticking then. Yet here we are, on the threshold of the holiday season. This year will be weird. Personally, I began a quarantine yesterday so I could go home and see my parents for Thanksgiving. I know not everyone has this luxury, and so it might be a Zoom holiday for a lot of people. Never fear – movies can help fill in whatever you’re looking for this month. Whether you want something to make you cry or laugh, there’s a lot of new things coming to streaming this month. Here’s just a few of the notable ones I’ll be adding to my queue.

Amazon Prime

  • Bombshell (2019)
    • Drama. Pairs well with the Election madness, red wine, and bottled blonde hair.
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
    • Action. Pairs well with saying “holy shit” every five seconds at the film’s beauty.
  • Dead Poets Society (1989)
    • Heartwarming, coming of age tale. Pairs well with existential dread and wanting to be a part of something bigger than yourself.
  • Ronin (1998)
    • Crime action thriller. Pairs well with squinty-eyed DeNiro impressions and figure skating inspo.

HBO Max

  • 13 Going on 30 (2004)
    • Rom com – perhaps the most rom com to ever rom com. I mean, is there a better time for this movie to be available to stream than right now? If you’ve never seen it, give it a chance. It feels like a warm hug.
  • Cruel Intentions (1999)
    • Drama. Pairs well with Game-of-Thrones-level incest vibes and dressing like you’re still in the 90s.
  • The Devil’s Advocate (1997)
    • Legal thriller? Supernatural? Not sure how to define this one, but it pairs well with spooky vibes and a ~very deep~ admiration for Keanu Reeves in a suit.
  • High Fidelity (2000)
    • Romance. Pairs well with gaslighting ex-boyfriends who think their record collection is ~so~ much more eclectic than yours.
  • Mystic River (2003)
    • Thriller. Pairs well with family, mob ties, and a side of murder.
  • Thirteen Ghosts (2001)
    • Horror. Pairs well with 2000s yellow tinted sunglasses and gore that’s just enough to make you cringe but not gag.
  • The Call of the Wild (2019)
    • Action/survival tale. Pairs well with a lit cinnamon candle, an LL Bean catalogue, and a box of tissues. Just in case.

Hulu

  • Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)
    • Comedy. Pairs well with fast food and your stoner friend who insists there’s always a conspiracy when the government’s involved.
  • Happiest Season (2020)
    • Holiday rom com. Pairs well with cashmere, winer, and surprising parents with sexuality reveals at holidays.
  • I Am Greta (2020)
    • Documentary. Pairs well with hope for our future.
  • Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
    • Sci-fi action. Pairs well with the cyberpunk aesthetic, nonsensical technology sayings, and existential dread over the fact that this movie is set in 2021!!!!!
  • Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
    • Romance, period piece. Okay, someone needs to stop letting me recommend Keanu Reeves movies. Pairs well with superfluous Shakespearean language, white cotton linens, and an utter lack of communication that propels all of Shakespeare’s plays.
  • Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2009)
    • Fantasy. Pairs well with nostalgia of being the kid in the back of the class who pretended to be a demi-god after reading the novels.
  • The Blair Witch Project (1999)
    • Horror. Pairs well with crunchy leaves, random sticks appearing in certain formations, and snot.
  • The Prestige (2006)
    • Thriller/mystery. Pairs well with foggy weather, a nice cup of joe, and magic chocolate frogs.
  • The Waterboy (1998)
    • Comedy. Pairs well with entirely too much empathy for Adam Sandler’s characters.

Netflix

  • A Clockwork Orange (1971)
    • Drama/thriller. Pairs well with that one kid who read it and started calling his friends “droogs” but really he’s nothing like Alex Delarge and fundamentally misunderstood the point of the film.
  • Easy A (2010)
    • Comedy. Pairs well with listening to “Pocket Full of Sunshine” on repeat for weeks after and using a thesaurus to understand some of Emma Stone’s dialogue.
  • Knock Knock (2015)
    • Thriller. Pairs well with watching through the holes of your fingers covering your face and never letting a stranger into your house to begin with. P.S. – sorry for another Keanu rec, but I think about his monologue in this once a week.
  • Fruitvale Station (2013)
    • Drama. Pairs well with continuing anti-racism education for yourself and others.
  • Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square (2020)
    • Holiday comedy. Pairs well with teased-to-God blonde hair, the smell of snickerdoodle cookies, and a warm hug from the angel herself, Dolly Parton.
  • Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
    • Drama. Pairs well with Oscar bait. (Note: this movie has gotten ~terrible~ reviews. I’m still including it here because it’s still notable.)

Peacock

  • The Bourne Identity (2002)
    • Thriller. Pairs well with motion sickness and the urge to do parkour.
  • Field of Dreams (1989)
    • Sports drama. Pairs well with wanting to cry and an undying yet inexplicable love for Kevin Costner.
  • The Fifth Element (1997)
    • Sci-fi. Pairs well with Bruce Willis’ iconic white tank top, the urge to dye your hair orange, and more cyberpunk aesthetic vibes.
  • Parenthood (1989)
    • Drama. Pairs well with the overwhelming love and equal frustration for members of your family. (And Keanu Reeves with his best haircut.)
